Caminar por lo efímero. El proyecto de la revista Primer Plano en el contexto de la crítica de cine en Chile

Abstract

La revista chilena de crítica de cine Primer Plano, fundada en 1972, tuvo una breve y acelerada trayectoria. Nacida durante el gobierno de Salvador Allende y la Unidad Popular, en menos de dos años logró publicar cinco números, dejando un sexto suspendido a causa del golpe militar de septiembre de 1973. Paralelamente al movimiento continental conocido como nuevo cine latinoamericano, Primer Plano se levantó como una de las primeras revistas de crítica especializada en Chile, preocupada por la dimensión estética de la imagen fílmica y el estatuto de la crítica dentro del sistema cinematográfico. A partir del contexto político y social que ronda su creación y su vínculo con las tendencias del cine local, el presente artículo se centra en la crítica antes que, en las obras fílmicas, a través de dos claves para comprender este singular proyecto crítico. En primera instancia se examina una crítica que discute su propia historia y su lenguaje, particularmente en la relación con la irrupción en el cine de ficción de la realidad social; en segundo lugar, se trabaja el punto de vista de la revista con el llamado nuevo cine chileno; finalmente, se concluye con las aristas que transforman a Primer Plano en un referente fundamental para la historia del cine latinoamericano y la crítica en Chile.

The Chilean film criticism magazine Primer Plano, founded in 1972, had a short and fast-paced history. Created during the Unidad Popular government of Salvador Allende, in less than two years it managed to publish five numbers, leaving a sixth number suspended because of the military coup of September 1973. During the years of the continental movement known as New Latin American Cinema, Primer Plano became one of the first magazines in Chile aimed at carrying out specialized film criticism, concerned with the aesthetic dimension of the cinematic image, taking the critical exercise to a central position within the cinematographic system. Centered foremost in film criticism rather than the films themselves, this article addresses some key elements to understand this singular critical project; the political and social context surrounding its creation and its links with local cinema trends. Thus, we study first a type of film criticism that begins to examine its own history, its work and its language, particularly in the relationship that the magazine built with the intromission of social reality in fiction cinema. Secondly, we work the critical point of view of Primer Plano towards the so-called New Chilean Cinema. Finally, the article concludes with some of the key elements that turn Primer Plano into a core reference for the history of cinema and criticism in Chile.
