The expansion of Covid-19 in Mexico in 2020: an approach from time series econometrics
Abstract
This work analyzes the series of infections and deaths accumulated by Covid-19 in Mexico between the end of February and December 31, 2020. Both series are integrated of order 1 (I(1)) and cointegrated, for which they are modeled with an error correction vector (VEC). Several vec estimations find a longterm elasticity of deaths to infections lower than one. This result implies that the increase in infections will reduce the fatality rate of the disease, although at a slow pace. The analysis is useful to make extrapolations, if the real infections were 40 times higher than those registered and the deaths were twice the number of the official ones, three million registered infected would imply an official death number of between 190 and 250 thousand, but a number real not very far from half a million.
